What is a flyback chronograph?
On a classic chronograph, restarting a timing requires three actions: stop, reset, then restart. A flyback does it all in one push: pressing the pusher instantly resets and restarts the chronograph, ideal for measuring successive legs in flight.
Why is the big date interesting?
The big date uses two discs to display the date in a large, highly legible format. On the Pilot Big Date Flyback, it is coupled with an instantaneous jump: the digit changes in one snap at midnight, with no gradual "creep". This is a mechanically complex complication to achieve.
What is the difference between the Pilot Automatic and the Chronomaster Original?
The Pilot Automatic is a tool watch with an aviation spirit: clean dial, Arabic numerals, big date, no chronograph. The Chronomaster Original is a classic tri-compax chronograph with strong sporting and heritage credentials. The Pilot better suits those wanting a clean daily watch with a big date.
Is the Pilot approved for flight use?
The Zenith Pilot is not certified to current military aeronautical watchmaking standards (Nav, PN/PW). It is an aviation-inspired watch, robust and legible, but not a regulated cockpit instrument. For professional cockpit use, consult your national aviation regulations.
Does the Pilot come with a leather strap?
Yes. Both the Pilot Automatic and the Big Date Flyback are available with leather (calf) straps in addition to the integrated steel bracelet. The 40 mm Pilot Automatic sits particularly well on a supple leather strap, reinforcing the watch's vintage aviation character.
