Titanium watches
How to choose a titanium watch?
Four criteria guide your choice: grade, finishing, weight and use. As for grade, Grade 2 remains the most common (soft, easy to finish); Grade 5 adds aluminium and vanadium for greater hardness and scratch resistance. As for finishing, sandblasted / brushed dominates (the trademark matte look), polished stays rare and requires specific expertise. Titanium weighs 40 % less than equivalent steel: a 42 mm titanium case wears like a 38 mm steel case. Use-wise, titanium shines in diving, aviation, on large diameters and for sensitive skin (fully hypoallergenic). Recommended diameter: 41-44 mm to enjoy the lightness without weight constraint.
Which titanium watch for which profile?
- Light active daily → 42 mm sport titanium, sandblasted
- Committed diving → Grade 5 titanium, 200-300 m
- Pilot / outdoor → matte titanium aviation
- Sensitive skin / nickel allergy → 39 mm dress titanium
- Comfortable large diameters → 44-46 mm titanium
- Light traveller → titanium GMT
The Auberi insight: the first thing a client says when trying titanium is "I can't feel it on my wrist". Perception changes radically against steel, especially on 42 mm diameters and beyond.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Grade 2 and Grade 5?
Grade 2 is pure titanium: soft, easy to machine, moderate scratch resistance. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) adds 6 % aluminium and 4 % vanadium: harder, more scratch-resistant, slightly denser but still 40 % lighter than steel. Most high-end sports watches use Grade 5.
Does titanium scratch easily?
Grade 2 marks more than 316L steel under hard impact. Grade 5 and sandblasted surfaces hide everyday micro-scratches well — the patina blends into the matte look. To limit visible marks, choose brushed or sandblasted finishes rather than polished.
Is titanium really hypoallergenic?
Yes, fully. Titanium contains no free nickel or chromium: it is used in surgery for implants, which speaks to its skin tolerance. For clients allergic to nickel or with very sensitive skin, titanium is the safest solution — including on the full bracelet.
Can a titanium case be re-polished?
Yes, but the work requires specific expertise: titanium heats fast and reacts differently from steel during polishing. Our watchmaking workshop in Nice handles re-polishing of Grade 2 and Grade 5 titanium cases, while preserving the original sandblasted surfaces.
Which brands make the best titanium watches?
The references: Tudor Pelagos (Grade 2), IWC Big Pilot Top Gun (Grade 5), Panerai Submersible Titanio, Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Titanium, Grand Seiko (titanium Spring Drive), Breitling Avenger Titanium. Choose by use: diving, aviation, daily versatility, or lightness on large diameters.
