How to choose a power reserve watch?

Four criteria guide your choice: display type, capacity, movement and style. As for display, the retrograde hand on a sub-dial remains the classic format; the linear indicator appears on contemporary models; some show the reserve movement-side (visible through the case back). For capacity, 70 to 80 hours has become the modern standard (clears a weekend without wearing), while several days to several months mark haute-horlogerie long-reserve models. The automatic manufacture movement is the dominant format; manual stays prized for thinness. Recommended diameter: 39-42 mm for daily classic wear, 42-46 mm for bolder models.

Which power reserve watch for which profile?

  • First informed watchmaking purchase → 40 mm auto reserve, 70 h
  • Long-autonomy enthusiast → 8 days+ haute horlogerie
  • Classic style → 39 mm manual reserve on leather
  • Versatile daily → reserve + calendar
  • Bold contemporary style → 42-46 mm contemporary reserve
  • Collector gift → manufacture long-reserve

The Auberi insight: the power reserve is one of the most practical day-to-day indications, it tells you whether the watch will survive the weekend off-wrist, or whether it needs winding before storage. 70 hours has become the modern standard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the power reserve indicator for?

It shows the remaining autonomy of the movement before it stops. On an automatic, it tells you whether the watch will hold over a night or weekend off-wrist; on a manual, it helps plan the next winding. The feature does not affect accuracy, only ease of use.

Which power reserve should I choose?

38-42 h remains the older standard and suits daily wear. 70-80 h is the modern benchmark (Tudor, Rolex, Omega) and clears a weekend off-wrist. 8 days or more belongs to haute horlogerie and lets you forget the watch for a week or several.

How does power reserve work mechanically?

The mainspring, as it unwinds, drives the gears and hands. The reserve equals the total time the spring takes to fully unwind from full tension. The longer, thinner and more tense the spring, the longer the reserve. Some movements use two parallel barrels.

Do I really need 8 days of autonomy?

For daily wear, 70 h is more than enough: the watch winds itself. 8 days+ becomes relevant for collectors rotating several models: you can leave a reference in the safe for a week without finding it stopped. More a luxury than a real necessity.

Which brands make the best power reserves?

For long reserves: Panerai (P.5000, 8 days), IWC (Pellaton, 7 days), A. Lange (Lange 31, 31 days), Hublot (MP-05, 50 days), Vacheron (Twin Beat, 65 days in active mode). For modern 70 h standards: Tudor (MT calibres), Rolex, Omega Master Chronometer.
