How to choose a steel watch?

Four criteria guide your choice: steel grade, finishing, bracelet and use. As for grade, 316L steel is the watchmaking standard (strong corrosion resistance, hypoallergenic); Rolex's 904L Oystersteel pushes salt corrosion resistance and repeated-polishing tolerance further. As for finishing, alternating brushed / polished dresses high-end sports watches, full-polished stays rare (jewellery watches), full-brushed leans tool. For the bracelet, integrated steel (Royal Oak, Nautilus, Aquanaut, Ingenieur) signs the chic sports watches; Milanese mesh, oyster and jubilee open other registers. Recommended diameter: 39-42 mm for versatility, 36-38 mm for women or thin wrists.

Which steel watch for which profile?

  • First all-round watch → 40 mm versatile steel, oyster bracelet
  • Chic 7/7 style → integrated-bracelet sports
  • Water sports / leisure → 40-42 mm steel diver, 200 m
  • Office / formal wear → polished dress steel on leather
  • Rugged outdoor → brushed tool steel on NATO
  • Versatile gift → steel chronograph or GMT

The Auberi insight: steel remains the most versatile material, it takes any finish, handles daily life and can be polished without losing material. It is often the best first watchmaking purchase.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between 316L and 904L steel?

316L is the watchmaking standard: excellent corrosion resistance, easy polishing. 904L (rebranded Oystersteel by Rolex) contains more chromium, nickel and molybdenum: even better resistance to salt corrosion and repeated polishing. To the eye, the difference is small; under extreme use, it shows.

Will a steel watch rust at sea?

No. Watchmaking-grade steels (316L and beyond) are fully resistant to salt corrosion under normal use. Rinsing with fresh water after a long swim prevents deposits in the bracelet links. On leisure sports watches, the steel bracelet handles swimming and even scuba diving without trouble.

Can a steel case be re-polished?

Yes — and it is one of the great advantages of steel. Our workshop in Nice polishes out surface scratches and restores brushed edges as needed. Mixed brushed/polished surfaces (Royal Oak, Nautilus) require special expertise to respect the original lines.

Is steel hypoallergenic?

316L is considered hypoallergenic for the vast majority of skins. For very sensitive skin or nickel allergies, switching to a titanium case (even more tolerant) or a rubber strap (removing direct metal contact altogether) is the safer option.

Which steel watches are the most collectible?

Integrated-bracelet sports: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Patek Philippe Nautilus, Vacheron Overseas, Lange Odysseus. Tool / diver side: Rolex Submariner, GMT-Master II, Omega Seamaster, Tudor Black Bay. These references hold or gain value in resale, especially in steel.
