Sports watches
How to choose a sports watch?
Four criteria guide your choice: style, water resistance, strap and diameter. As for style, the dressy sport with integrated steel bracelet (Royal Oak, Nautilus, Aquanaut, Aqua Terra) remains the most versatile silhouette: suit as well as polo. The versatile diver adds the aquatic dimension, the sport chronograph measurement functions, the GMT time zones for sporty travellers. Minimum recommended water resistance: 100 m to handle perspiration, showers and activities. For the strap, integrated steel signs daily luxury, rubber handles intense effort. The 40-42 mm diameter stays the comfort-presence balance for active use. Quick-change strap systems further extend versatility from suit to gym in seconds.
Which sports watch for which profile?
- Active daily / office-sport → 40 mm dressy sport
- All-round athlete → 200 m diver watches 40-42 mm
- Collection gift → integrated-steel dressy sport
- Sporty traveller → 42 mm sport GMT watch
- Trail / running → trail 42-44 mm rubber
- Intensive sport / triathlon → resistant chrono 100 m+
The Auberi insight: the integrated-steel dressy sport (Royal Oak, Nautilus, Aquanaut, Aqua Terra) remains the most-requested silhouette among our active clients — one watch that fits a suit as comfortably as a tennis polo, with no compromises.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a sports watch and a diving watch?
A diving watch is highly specialised for water (unidirectional bezel, 200 m+ water resistance, strong lume). A sports watch stays more versatile: usable in sport and daily wear, 100 m water resistance is enough, often more dressy. A diver can serve for sport, the reverse less so.
Is 100 m or 200 m water resistance enough for sport?
100 m covers perspiration, showers, swimming and occasional snorkeling without trouble. 200 m is required as soon as you scuba dive or surf intensively. The marketing distinction "50 m = shower yes, swimming no" is conservative: 100 m guarantees all common aquatic uses.
Integrated steel or rubber strap for daily sport?
Integrated steel (Royal Oak, Nautilus type) stays versatile suit-and-sport and keeps its value. Rubber suits intense and warm effort, lighter on the wrist. Many clients alternate: steel during the week, rubber on weekends. Quick-change straps are increasingly common.
What size for a sports watch?
40-42 mm remains the comfort-presence balance. Under 40 mm, you lose legibility and sporty presence. Beyond 44 mm, the watch becomes bulky for intense sport and catches sleeves. Weight also matters: prefer titanium or hollowed steel for 42 mm+ models.
Which brands make the best dressy sports watches?
The legendary references: Audemars Piguet (Royal Oak), Patek Philippe (Nautilus, Aquanaut), Vacheron (Overseas), IWC (Ingenieur), Omega (Aqua Terra), Tudor (Black Bay 58 and Pelagos), Tag Heuer (Carrera). Choice depends on budget, waiting lists and attachment to a specific design.
