How to choose an automatic watch?

Four criteria guide your choice: calibre, power reserve, finishing and certification. As for calibre, a manufacture movement (designed in-house by the brand) signs watchmaking authenticity and supports resale value; ETA or Sellita bases remain reliable and more accessible. The modern power reserve sits around 70-80 hours (clears a weekend off-wrist), going further on haute-horlogerie models. As for finishing, the sapphire case back reveals the oscillating weight and decorated bridges (Côtes de Genève, perlage). For certification, the COSC chronometer label guarantees ±4 sec/day; Omega's Master Chronometer or Rolex's Superlative go further (±2 sec/day, magnetic resistance). Recommended diameter: 39-42 mm for versatility.

Which automatic watch for which profile?

  • First informed purchase → 40 mm versatile auto, manufacture or ETA-based
  • Absolute accuracy → COSC chronometer or Master Chronometer
  • Demanding collector → long-reserve manufacture, sapphire back
  • Formal wear → extra-thin auto 38-40 mm on leather
  • Complications enthusiast → auto chronograph, column wheel
  • Traveller → pair with a GMT manufacture, 70 h

The Auberi insight: the sapphire case back has become a standard on quality automatics, watching the rotor swing remains one of the most lasting watchmaking pleasures, day after day.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to wear my automatic watch every day?

Not mandatory, but recommended to keep the movement lubricated. An auto resting for several weeks is not harmful, but the spring relaxes and the oils may stiffen slightly. A watch winder keeps autonomy going for collectors rotating several pieces.

Manufacture or ETA / Sellita base what's the difference?

A manufacture calibre is designed and produced by the brand itself: a watchmaking signature, stronger resale value, often more refined finishing. ETA or Sellita bases are proven movements sold to many brands, reliable and more affordable. The difference shows in price and through the case back.

What accuracy should I expect from an automatic watch?

±10 to 20 sec/day for a standard movement, ±4 sec/day for a COSC chronometer, ±2 sec/day on Omega Master Chronometer or Rolex Superlative. A new auto usually settles over the first weeks of wear. Beyond the figures, real-world use is what matters: wind, set, carry on.

How often should I service an automatic watch?

A service every 5 to 7 years is recommended: dismantling, cleaning, lubrication, water-resistance and accuracy checks. Our certified watchmaking workshop in Nice handles servicing for the main brands (Rolex, Omega, Tudor, TAG Heuer, Cartier...), under or outside warranty.

Can I try several automatics in your boutique?

Yes, our boutiques in Nice and Monaco let you try every model in stock. Our advisors adjust the bracelet, check the look on the wrist and present the movement through the sapphire back. For references not in stock, a special order can be arranged.
