How to choose a GMT watch?

Four criteria guide your choice: GMT type, bezel, diameter and strap. As for type, a True GMT lets you set the hour hand independently (without touching the seconds hand), ideal for hopping time zones while travelling. An Office GMT sets the 24h hand instead, simpler and cheaper but less practical in transit. The 24h ceramic bidirectional bezel can display a third time zone; the colours Pepsi (red-blue), Batman (blue-black) or Sprite (green-black) sign modern GMT aesthetics. Recommended diameter: 40-42 mm for versatile daily wear, 42-44 mm for the pilot style. Steel bracelet for versatility or leather for daily-classic.

Which GMT for which profile?

  • Frequent traveller → 40-42 mm True GMT on steel
  • Vintage aesthetic → two-tone GMT Pepsi or Coke
  • Pilot / aviation → 42 mm pilot GMT with aged leather
  • Diving and travel → 41-43 mm diver GMT
  • Business globe-trotter → Worldtimer 24 cities
  • First GMT → versatile 40 mm Office GMT

The Auberi insight: the True GMT vs Office GMT distinction changes everything when travelling, a True GMT sets the hour hand and date without touching the seconds, ideal for jumping time zones. An Office GMT requires resetting the entire time.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a GMT watch for?

A GMT shows a second time zone via a 4th hand circling a 24h scale on the dial or bezel. Invented for Pan Am long-haul pilots in the 1950s, it remains the reference tool for travellers, traders and anyone in regular contact with another time zone.

True GMT vs Office GMT, what's the difference?

On a True GMT (Rolex GMT-Master, Tudor Black Bay Pro), the hour hand sets independently and changes with the date at local midnight. On an Office GMT (most affordable models), the 4th hand sets — the main hand stays anchored to the reference time zone.

How do I read the second time zone?

The GMT hand (often red or coloured) makes one full revolution in 24h. Read its time on the 24h dial or rotating 24h bezel. If the bezel rotates, it can display a 3rd time zone. Most GMT watches let you track 2 or 3 time zones simultaneously.

Pepsi, Batman, Sprite bezel: what does that mean?

These are collector nicknames for two-tone bezels: Pepsi (red-blue), Coke (red-black), Batman (blue-black), Sprite (green-black), Root Beer (brown-gold). The coloured day/night separation comes from vintage Rolex GMT models. Today, it has become an aesthetic marker adopted by every brand.

Which brands make the best GMT watches?

The references: Rolex (GMT-Master II), Tudor (Black Bay Pro, Black Bay GMT), Omega (Aqua Terra GMT, Seamaster GMT), Grand Seiko (SBGE), Tag Heuer (Aquaracer GMT), Longines (Spirit Zulu Time). For haute-horlogerie worldtimers: Patek, Vacheron, JLC.
