How to choose a quartz watch?

Four criteria guide your choice: accuracy, autonomy, power source and style. As for accuracy, standard quartz holds ±15 sec/month, high-frequency quartz (Grand Seiko 9F, Citizen Chronomaster) reaches ±10 sec/year, the finest accuracy available in production watchmaking. Battery life typically runs 2 to 3 years with a standard cell, up to 10 years on long-life calibres. As for power, solar (Eco-Drive, Solargraph, Tough Solar) removes battery changes; kinetic harvests motion energy from the wrist. Style-wise, quartz covers everything: extra-thin dress, sport, diving, chronograph. Recommended diameter: 36-42 mm depending on wrist size and use.

Which quartz watch for which profile?

  • First purchase / hassle-free daily → 38 mm versatile quartz
  • Looking for absolute accuracy → high-frequency quartz, Grand Seiko 9F
  • Traveller / outdoor → solar quartz, radio-controlled
  • Dress style / thin wrist → extra-thin quartz 33-38 mm
  • Reliable sport and chrono → quartz chronograph
  • Accurate, lasting gift → solar or high-precision quartz

The Auberi insight: quartz remains unbeatable on two key criteria, accuracy and absence of maintenance. For everyday wear with no fuss and no winding, it is often the most rational choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is quartz less prestigious than automatic?

Not across all ranges. Grand Seiko 9F, Cartier Tank, Patek 5067A and Breguet Type XX quartz show that high-end quartz remains valued, especially in dress watches. The difference is a watchmaking stance: accuracy and reliability for quartz, mechanical pleasure for automatic.

How long does a quartz watch battery last?

Between 2 and 3 years in standard, up to 5 or even 10 years on long-life calibres. Solar and Eco-Drive (Citizen) remove this change altogether: the photovoltaic cell under the dial converts light into energy. Our workshop replaces the battery and checks water resistance in store.

What's the difference between quartz and solar?

Standard quartz uses a battery to be replaced every 2-3 years. Solar quartz uses a photovoltaic cell that recharges an accumulator (about 6 months autonomy in the dark). Solar requires no power maintenance and stays reliable for 20 to 30 years.

Is high-frequency quartz worth the premium?

For absolute accuracy, yes: ±10 sec/year versus ±15 sec/month on a standard quartz — about 50 times better. Grand Seiko 9F and Citizen Chronomaster reach this performance through a selected crystal and thermal compensation. The premium is justified for that specific use.

Can a vintage quartz watch be repaired?

Yes in most cases. Our workshop in Nice replaces the quartz movement when the original part is no longer available, while keeping the original case, dial and hands. ETA, Ronda and Miyota calibres are largely compatible with vintage cases.
