What is the visible escapement in an Open watch?
The escapement is the mechanism that regulates the speed of the movement's gear train: it releases energy from the mainspring at the rhythm of the balance wheel. In the Chronomaster Open, a window in the dial reveals the escapement, pallet fork, escape wheel, balance wheel, oscillating at 36,000 vph (5 Hz), five oscillations per second visible to the naked eye.
Does the aperture weaken the dial?
No. The Chronomaster Open's aperture is integrated from the dial's design stage, it is not a post-production cut-out. The edges are finished and protected. The movement beneath the window is visible but supported by the standard El Primero calibre bridges.
Is the Chronomaster Open harder to read?
Reading hours, minutes, chronograph and date remains identical to other Chronomasters. The escapement window occupies a dial zone that does not interfere with normal reading functions. Some clients find it even more intuitive: the animated escapement draws the eye without disrupting legibility.
Does the Open window let in dust?
No. The window is protected by a frosted or transparent sapphire crystal depending on the version, hermetically sealed. The overall piece is water-resistant to 100 m like other Chronomasters. The movement is not exposed to external elements.
Are there other ZENITH "Open" models outside the Chronomaster?
The Chronomaster Sport Skeleton goes further with a fully skeletonised calibre. The "Open" concept (single escapement window) is otherwise specific to the Chronomaster Open in the current range. It represents a balance between legibility, visible mechanics and dial aesthetics.
