Omega Constellation Watches
How to Choose Your Constellation Watch
Launched in 1952, the Omega Constellation is instantly recognizable by its claws at 3 and 9 o’clock, integrated bracelet and observatory medallion engraved on the caseback. The current collection spans several sizes, from quartz to mechanical movements, so a few guidelines can help you make the right choice.
The first criterion to consider is case size, which should be assessed in relation to your wrist circumference. The collection is mainly available in 25, 28, 29, 39 and 41 mm sizes. On a slim wrist (under 15 cm), the 25 and 28 mm models remain well proportioned, while the 29 mm version suits a slim to medium-sized wrist. The 39 mm offers a discreet presence on a medium-sized wrist, whereas the 41 mm model (13.4 mm thick, with a 44 mm lug-to-lug measurement) is better suited to wrists measuring over 17 cm.
The second criterion is the movement. The 25 and 28 mm models are fitted with the quartz Calibre 4061, with a battery life of around 48 months: no winding required, and the watch is ready to wear even after several weeks off the wrist. The 29, 39 and 41 mm models are equipped with Co-Axial Master Chronometer automatic movements certified by METAS (Calibres 8700, 8800 and 8900), with a date window and transparent caseback.
The third criterion is intended use. Water resistance is 30 metres for the quartz models and 50 metres for the automatic versions. Hand washing and rain are not an issue, but the Constellation is not a diving watch.
Finally, there is finishing: stainless steel, two-tone steel and Sedna™ gold, solid gold, diamond-set or Roman-numeral engraved bezels, and mother-of-pearl, aventurine or meteorite dials. Stainless steel works equally well at the office and at the weekend, while gold and diamond-set versions lend themselves to more formal occasions.
To compare proportions, trying the watches on the wrist at our Auberi boutiques on the French Riviera can help you decide between two neighbouring sizes.
Which Watch for Which Profile?
If you have a slim wrist and wear your watch occasionally → 25 or 28 mm quartz Constellation.
If you have a slim to medium-sized wrist and an interest in mechanical movements → 29 mm automatic Constellation.
If you have a medium-sized wrist and need a watch for the office → 39 mm Constellation.
If your wrist measures over 17 cm → 41 mm Constellation.
If you are looking for a jewellery watch → diamond-set bezel or Sedna™ gold.
FAQ
What is the difference between the Constellation and the Globemaster?
The Globemaster watch is part of the Constellation family, but draws on the style of models from the 1950s, with a faceted “pie-pan” dial, fluted bezel and no claws. The classic Constellation is distinguished by its lateral claws and integrated bracelet.
Does an automatic Constellation need to be wound?
No. The movement is wound by the natural movements of the wrist. When worn daily, this automatic watch keeps running without manual intervention. After several days off the wrist, it will stop and can be restarted with a few turns of the crown before setting the time again.
Can you swim with a Constellation?
The automatic models are water-resistant to 50 metres, while the quartz models are water-resistant to 30 metres. These ratings cover splashes and hand washing. For swimming in a pool or the sea, a diving watch such as the Seamaster is more suitable.
What does Master Chronometer certification mean?
It is awarded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) after eight tests covering accuracy, power reserve, water resistance and resistance to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss. It applies to the 29, 39 and 41 mm automatic models.
