How to Choose Your Omega Chronograph Watch

The first criterion is wrist size. The Omega chronograph collection offers several case sizes. The Speedmaster 38 measures 38 mm in diameter and 14.7 mm in thickness, with an 18 mm lug width, making it suitable for slimmer wrists. The Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional has a 42 mm diameter and a thickness of 13.2 mm, offering a mid-sized option. The Seamaster Diver 300M Chronograph is the largest of the three, measuring 44 mm in diameter, 52.8 mm from lug to lug and 17.2 mm in thickness. Before purchasing, compare the lug-to-lug length with the width of your wrist: the lugs should not extend beyond its edges.

The second criterion is the type of winding mechanism. The OMEGA Moonwatch is powered by the Calibre 3861, a manually wound chronograph movement with a 50-hour power reserve, requiring daily winding. The Speedmaster 38 and the Seamaster are automatic watches. The former uses the Co-Axial Calibre 3330, with a power reserve of approximately 52 hours, while the latter is powered by the Calibre 9900, which offers a 60-hour power reserve thanks to its twin barrels.

The third criterion is intended use. The Moonwatch is water-resistant to 50 metres, making it suitable for everyday wear but not ideal for water activities. The Seamaster Diver 300M Chronograph is water-resistant to 300 metres and features a helium escape valve, designed for diving.

Finally, consider the crystal. The Moonwatch is available with either a Hesalite crystal, faithful to the original historical model, or a sapphire crystal paired with a transparent case back.

Which Watch Suits Which Lifestyle?

If you have a slim wrist or are looking for a more discreet size → Speedmaster 38.

If you prefer manual winding and want the model worn during the lunar missions → Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional.

If you swim or dive regularly → Seamaster Diver 300M Chronograph.

If you need a date window → Speedmaster 38 or Seamaster.

FAQ

Does a Speedmaster Moonwatch need to be wound every day?

Yes, daily winding is recommended. Its Calibre 3861 is manually wound and offers a 50-hour power reserve. Winding it each morning by turning the crown until you feel resistance helps ensure consistent timekeeping. The movement cannot be wound by the motion of your wrist.

Can you swim while wearing an Omega chronograph?

It depends on the model. The Seamaster Diver 300M Chronograph is designed for swimming and diving. With the Moonwatch, which is water-resistant to 50 metres, it is best to avoid swimming. In all cases, never operate the chronograph pushers underwater.

What is the difference between Hesalite and sapphire crystal on the Moonwatch?

Hesalite is a synthetic crystal used on historical models. It scratches more easily but can be polished. Sapphire crystal offers greater scratch resistance and, on the relevant versions, is paired with a transparent case back that reveals the Calibre 3861. The choice largely comes down to aesthetic preference.

What does Master Chronometer certification mean?

It is awarded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) following tests covering accuracy, water resistance and magnetic resistance. The Calibres 3861 and 9900 are Master Chronometer certified and can withstand magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss.

What is the warranty period for an Omega watch?

All Omega watches come with a five-year warranty covering material and manufacturing defects, provided they are purchased from an authorised retailer. Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase.
