How to Choose Your Seamaster Railmaster Watch

The current Seamaster Railmaster collection comprises four 38 mm stainless steel references. Four practical criteria can help you make your choice.

Your wrist size. The case measures 38 mm in diameter, 12.36 mm in thickness and 45 mm lug-to-lug. These proportions are suitable for wrists measuring around 15 cm and above. On a larger wrist, the watch retains a discreet, classic appearance.

The seconds display. The black-gradient grey dial is powered by the calibre 8806, with a central seconds hand. The black-gradient beige dial uses the calibre 8804, with a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock and vintage-toned Super-LumiNova indexes. Neither version features a date display.

The strap or bracelet. The stainless steel bracelet incorporates a comfort adjustment system, which is useful when the wrist swells slightly in warm weather, a common occurrence in summer on the French Riviera. The Novonappa leather strap (black for the grey dial, golden brown for the beige dial) makes the watch feel lighter and gives it a dressier appearance.

Your intended use. Water-resistant to 150 metres and fitted with a screw-down crown, the Railmaster is also resistant to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss. It is therefore suitable for everyday wear, swimming and use around electronic devices. For regular swimming, the stainless steel bracelet is more suitable than leather.

Both calibres are Master Chronometer certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), with an accuracy ranging from 0 to +5 seconds per day.

Which Watch for Which Profile?

If you wear your watch every day, including at the beach → grey dial on a stainless steel bracelet (ref. 235.10.38.20.06.001).

If you are looking for a discreet watch for the office → grey dial on a black leather strap (ref. 235.12.38.20.06.001).

If you prefer a vintage style with small seconds → beige dial on a stainless steel bracelet (ref. 235.10.38.20.13.001) or on a golden-brown leather strap (ref. 235.12.38.20.13.001).

FAQ

What is the difference between the Railmaster and the Aqua Terra?

The Railmaster draws on the design of the 1957 model: large Arabic numerals, Broad Arrow hands and a date-free dial. The Aqua Terra watch features a dial with horizontal teak-style lines and, on most versions, a date window. Both offer 150-metre water resistance and Master Chronometer calibres.

Can you swim with an Omega Railmaster?

Yes. Its screw-down crown, screw-down case back and 150-metre water resistance make it suitable for swimming and bathing. After swimming in the sea or a pool, rinsing the watch with fresh water is recommended. For frequent water use, opt for the version on a stainless steel bracelet. Please note, however, that it is not a diving watch.

What is the purpose of the 15,000-gauss resistance?

Computers, smartphones, induction hobs and magnetic clasps can generate magnetic fields strong enough to affect the accuracy of a mechanical watch. The Railmaster's calibre can withstand magnetic fields of up to 1.5 tesla, which is 15 times the 1,000-gauss resistance of the original 1957 model.

What is the power reserve of the Railmaster?

The calibre 8806 used in the grey-dial version provides a 55-hour power reserve. If you take the watch off on Friday evening, it will still be running on Sunday evening. Its bidirectional automatic winding system is sufficient to keep it running when worn every day.
