How to choose your Tudor Titanium?

Tudor titanium watches are primarily part of the Pelagos collection, which is available in several diameters and water-resistance levels depending on the intended use. The choice starts with the case diameter: the Pelagos 39 (11.8 mm thick) is suitable for slimmer wrists or for those who prefer a compact case, while the Pelagos 42 (14.3 mm thick) is aimed at wrists measuring 17 cm and more. The Pelagos FXD and Pelagos Ultra, available in 42 mm and 43 mm, are designed for more demanding technical use.

Water resistance varies significantly depending on the model and should match the intended use. The Pelagos 39 is water-resistant to 200 metres, which is sufficient for swimming and surface diving. The Pelagos 42 offers water resistance to 500 metres, a level intended for scuba diving. The Pelagos Ultra, designed for saturation diving, is water-resistant to 1,000 metres and is certified as a Master Chronometer by METAS.

The choice of bracelet or strap also depends on how the watch will be worn. The titanium bracelet, with a folding clasp featuring a patented extension system, allows for automatic adjustment when a diving suit compresses and is well suited to frequent water use. The rubber strap, supplied as an additional option with several references, provides a lighter alternative for everyday wear outside of diving. The Pelagos FXD, developed with the French Navy, uses fixed bars machined directly into the case for increased robustness, at the expense of limited compatibility with other straps.

Finally, weight is a key consideration: titanium weighs approximately 60% as much as stainless steel for the same volume, significantly reducing the weight on the wrist compared with steel Black Bay watches of a comparable diameter. This is particularly important for extended wear or physical activity.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between grade 2 and grade 5 titanium?

Grade 2 (pure titanium) is softer, more corrosion-resistant but marks easily. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V alloy) is harder, stiffer, harder to machine but holds sharp edges better. Tudor uses both depending on model and water-resistance requirements.

Does titanium scratch more than steel?

Grade 2 titanium marks more easily than 316L steel, especially on brushed surfaces. The Pelagos compensates with bead-blasting that homogenises micro-scratches. Grade 5 resists better. Compared to steel, titanium polishes less brilliantly but is far lighter.

Why does the Pelagos have an automatic bracelet extension system?

To adapt to a diving suit. The Tudor clasp integrates a spring-loaded blade that extends the bracelet by 25 mm without manipulation, depending on pressure. On dry land, the bracelet retracts. It's a patented system few competitors offer at this price level.

Does the Pelagos FXD have a rotating bezel?

Yes, a unidirectional 60-minute aluminium bezel, engraved and luminescent, conforming to the French Navy spec. The aluminium patinas after a few years of sea use. The FXD GMT, however, carries a fixed 24 h bezel — an important distinction at purchase.
