How to Choose Your Breitling Classic AVI Watch

The Classic AVI collection is available in several sizes and models, which should be evaluated according to practical criteria before visiting a boutique.

First, consider the case size. The Classic AVI comes in a 42 mm format, designed to suit the majority of wrist sizes, whereas the 46 mm Super AVI is intended for larger builds. As a general rule, wrists measuring less than 17 cm (6.7 inches) will be better suited to the 41 mm 1953 Re-Edition; above that, the 42 mm size is the benchmark format within the range.

Next, the movement: chronograph or time-only display. If you do not have a daily need for a chronograph, the 41 mm Day & Date versions (automatic calibre) offer a cleaner dial layout and a slimmer profile on the wrist. If a chronograph is essential, the 1953 Re-Edition is powered by the Breitling manufacture Calibre B09, a hand-wound movement with approximately 70 hours of power reserve, while the 42 mm Classic AVI models use the Breitling Calibre 23, which is thinner.

Aesthetics: vintage tribute or contemporary style. The collection pays tribute to four legendary aircraft—the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, the de Havilland Mosquito, the Vought F4U Corsair, and the P-51 Mustang—each available in distinctive colour schemes. If you prefer a more understated monochrome dial, the all-black 1953 Re-Edition is the obvious choice.

Finally, the strap. A vintage leather strap is ideal for office wear and evening occasions, while the stainless-steel bracelet offers greater versatility for everyday use. The Classic AVI pairs equally well with a suit or a casual outfit.

Which Watch for Which Profile?

Slim wrist (< 17 cm / 6.7 in) and everyday use without a chronograph → Aviator 8 Day & Date 41 mm
Watch-history enthusiast and collector → AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition (manual winding, domed hesalite crystal)
Aviation fan looking for a touch of colour → Classic AVI 42 mm P-51 Mustang, Corsair, or P-40 Warhawk edition, depending on your preferred colour scheme
Large wrist and a purposeful tool-watch aesthetic → Super AVI 46 mm (not strictly part of the Classic AVI collection, but worth considering)

FAQ

Is the Classic AVI suitable for everyday wear, or is it more of a collector’s watch?

It is a genuine everyday watch. The cases are robust and generously sized, the crowns and pushers are ergonomic, the dials are highly legible both day and night, and the knurled bezels are easy to operate. It handles regular wear effortlessly, including in active environments.

What is the water resistance of the Classic AVI?

The 1953 Re-Edition is water-resistant to 3 bar (30 metres / 100 feet), which provides protection against splashes and rain but is not suitable for swimming. Other models in the range vary between 3 and 10 bar depending on the version, so specifications should be checked individually in-store before any aquatic use.

Is the Classic AVI difficult to maintain over time?

No. All movements used throughout the range are Breitling manufacture calibres, ensuring long-term availability of spare parts. A complete service is generally recommended every five to seven years. Auberi provides after-sales support and can coordinate with the Breitling service network should a factory intervention be required.

What is the difference between the Classic AVI and the Super AVI?

The Super AVI watch is the 46 mm version, featuring a thicker case and a GMT complication that is not available on the Classic AVI. The Classic AVI was developed in a 42 mm format to meet demand from customers who appreciated the Super AVI’s aesthetic but wanted a more wearable size. Both collections coexist within the Breitling catalogue.

Is it possible to try on the Classic AVI at Auberi before purchasing?

Yes. Auberi carries several Classic AVI references in its boutiques on the French Riviera. Trying the watch on the wrist remains the best way to decide between the 41 mm and 42 mm sizes, as well as between the different aircraft editions. Photographs do not always accurately capture how the dial colours appear in natural light.
