Spotlight on the Rolex Milgauss: a tribute to science
Designed to meet the needs of the scientific community, the Rolex Milgauss has been reconciling high-intensity paramagnetic fields with chronometric precision since 1956.
The reliability and accuracy of an ordinary mechanical watch can be compromised by a magnetic field of just 50 to 100 gauss — yet many scientists are routinely exposed to fields far exceeding these levels in their workplace.
It was for this reason that Rolex created a watch unlike any other, capable of withstanding a magnetic force of 1,000 gauss: the Milgauss. The timepiece notably made its mark on the wrists of scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva.
A Singular Identity
In 2007, a new generation of this watch — evocative of the scientific world — was created.
This new Milgauss embodies the full breadth of Rolex's technical and watchmaking expertise and is distinguished aesthetically by its orange lightning bolt-shaped seconds hand, a design directly inspired by the original model. It features a green sapphire crystal, a first in watchmaking.
The Milgauss, Superlative Chronometer
The Milgauss is equipped with the Calibre 3131, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex.
It incorporates cutting-edge technologies patented by the brand, ensuring exceptional resistance to magnetic fields. Like 100% of Rolex watches, the Milgauss benefits from the Rolex-specific Superlative Chronometer certification (post-casing accuracy of –2/+2 seconds per day, more than twice the precision required of an officially certified chronometer) and is accompanied by a five-year international guarantee.
A High-Performance Protection System
The primary innovation behind the Milgauss watch's resistance to magnetic interference is its protective shield, housed within the Oyster case.
Crafted from ferromagnetic alloys selected by Rolex, it envelops and safeguards the movement. The symbol of magnetic induction — the capital letter B surmounted by a vector arrow — is engraved on this magnetic shield, though only Rolex-certified watchmakers will ever have the privilege of glimpsing it.
