Tudor S&G Watches
How to choose your Tudor S&G (steel-gold)?
Four criteria guide your choice: collection, gold proportion, diameter and dial. Tudor offers its S&G (Steel & Gold) line across three main families: Black Bay 41 S&G, Black Bay 36 S&G and Black Bay Chrono S&G. Construction pairs a 316L steel case with bezel, crown and central bracelet links in solid 18 ct yellow gold — not plating. The 36 mm targets slimmer or unisex wrists, the 41 mm remains the reference balance. Dial-wise, smoked blue stays the flagship, champagne leans into 70s heritage. MT5601 or MT5813 movements. Price range: €4,800 to €7,100 depending on model.
Which Tudor S&G for which profile?
- First versatile two-tone watch → Black Bay 41 S&G blue
- Slim / unisex wrist → Black Bay 36 S&G
- Multi-timezone traveller → Black Bay GMT S&G
- Elegant sport chronograph → Black Bay Chrono S&G
- Strong 70s heritage → sunray champagne version
- Anniversary / wedding gift → S&G 41 mm on two-tone bracelet
The Auberi insight: two-tone Tudor has surged back since 2022. In Monaco, clients often hesitate between a two-tone Rolex Datejust (~€14,800) and a Black Bay S&G (~€5,100). The gap nearly triples the value proposition in favour of the Tudor for daily wear.
Frequently asked questions
Is the gold on a Tudor S&G solid or plated?
Solid. Tudor uses real 18 ct yellow gold for the bezel, crown and central bracelet links. No plating, no PVD. It's one reason for the price positioning: gold raw material accounts for a significant share of the retail tag on these references.
How much does a Black Bay 41 S&G weigh?
Around 175 grams on the full steel-gold bracelet, vs 150 g for the all-steel Black Bay 41. The central gold links add wearing balance and a quality feel. For sensitive wrists, the leather option drops weight to ~120 g.
Does the two-tone patina over time?
18 ct gold doesn't oxidise and keeps its colour. 316L steel may pick up micro-scratches from normal wear, but Tudor uses a brushed-polished mixed finish that hides marks well. A service every 4-5 years with light polishing restores the original look.
Can you wear a Tudor S&G diving?
Yes for the Black Bay 41 and 58 S&G (200 m water-resistant), with the same care as the steel versions. Avoid prolonged chlorinated water that can affect the crown gasket. Rinse with fresh water after swimming. For intensive diving, all-steel or Pelagos titanium remain more practical.
Is buying S&G a good investment?
Tudor S&G appreciate less than full-steel versions on the secondary market, but new prices remain contained. Current rate for a well-kept 2-year-old Black Bay 41 S&G is around €4,200-€4,500. A pleasure buy before anything, not a speculative investment.
