A Design Born from a Sporting Challenge

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is much more than a watch—it is a legend of watchmaking, born from a challenge issued in 1930 at a polo club in British India. At the time, polo players, tired of seeing their watch crystals shattered during matches, asked Swiss businessman César de Trey to design a model capable of withstanding the shocks of the game. César de Trey then turned to Jacques-David LeCoultre, who, together with Edmond Jaeger and engineer René-Alfred Chauvot, devised a watch whose case could pivot 180°, thus protecting the delicate dial with a solid metal back. The name “Reverso,” from the Latin “I turn around,” naturally became the name for this revolutionary timepiece.

The patent was filed in March 1931, and within a year, the first Reverso appeared on the market, immediately winning over enthusiasts of elegant and robust watches.

Constant Technical and Aesthetic Evolution

From its inception, the Reverso stood out not only for its ingenious concept but also for its Art Deco aesthetics, recognizable by its rectangular case and lateral gadroons. While the first models were equipped with calibers supplied by Tavannes Watches Co., Jaeger-LeCoultre quickly developed its own rectangular movements to perfectly fit the case.

Over the decades, the Reverso has been released in a multitude of versions: quartz or automatic models, watchmaking complications (moon phase, tourbillon, chronograph, minute repeater), limited editions, jewelry creations, and of course, the famous Reverso Duoface, offering two dials with different complications on a single case. More than 50 calibers have been developed specifically for the Reverso collection, all assembled in the Vallée de Joux, the heart of the manufacture.

The Collection’s Most Iconic Models

The Reverso has traversed the ages, remaining true to its DNA while constantly reinventing itself. Among the most notable models are:

  • Reverso Originale (1931): The founding version, now reissued, that embodies the purity of Art Deco design.
  • Reverso Duoface (1994): A major innovation allowing two time zones or different complications to be displayed on each side of the case.
  • Reverso Tribute: A homage to the original aesthetic codes, with colored dials, dauphine hands, and interchangeable straps.
  • Reverso Gyrotourbillon and Grande Complication à Triptyque: True technical feats, these models integrate major complications into the emblematic rectangular format.

Today, the Reverso exists in versions for both men and women, from the understated and elegant Classic model to diamond-set jewelry creations, as well as limited editions for collectors.

A Collectible and Customizable Object

Since the 1930s, the Reverso has attracted enthusiasts of unique objects: the Maharaja of Karputala ordered 50 pieces engraved with his likeness, and many clients have personalized the solid back of their watch with engravings, enameling, or artistic motifs. This tradition continues today, with the Reverso offering a rare space for personal expression in the world of luxury watchmaking.

Pricing and Accessibility of the Reverso

The price of a Reverso varies according to the model, complication, and materials used. Entry-level models (Reverso Classic in steel, quartz or mechanical) start around €5,000 to €7,000. Automatic, Duoface, or complicated versions (power reserve, moon phase, calendar) range between €10,000 and €25,000. Limited editions, gold models, or grand complication creations can exceed €50,000, and much more for exceptional pieces.
