Matching engineering to design is what made this case so slim. The movement is hand-wound, allowing it to be thinner. The classic large seconds hand disappears in favor of a small seconds hand positioned in a register at 9 o’clock, which echoes a discreet power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock that balances the dial. The edges of the dial are rounded to emphasize the slimness of the case, which is curved to sit closer to the wrist. Sometimes, minimalism really is a plus. The caliber 9S63 is the first Grand Seiko movement to feature a small seconds hand. It is positioned at 9 o’clock, opposite the power reserve indicator. The caliber 9S63 offers a 72-hour power reserve and is accurate to +5 to -3 seconds per day. The movement is assembled and adjusted by hand by the master craftsmen at the new Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi.
